Saw Bar Not Cutting Properly

Several reasons can cause the saw bar to stop cutting through a piece of wood. Below are the most common issues.

Cause: Saw bar, chain or bar speed

The majority of the time, replacing the bar and chain will fix the cutting issue. Even if you think the bar and chain is fine, please change it! This can save you a lot of time and money.

If changing the bar and chain does not fix the issue, reduce the bar speed. Full guide click here

Cause: Low Battery Voltage

Sometimes the battery will not take a full charge or the battery charger does not fully charge the battery

  • Measure the voltage of a fully charged battery – it should be around 13.2V-13.4V
  • If the battery is under 12V, you will need to replace it.

Cause: Bent Bar Mount Plate

Sometimes the bar mount plate can bend after becoming pinched.

  • With the saw bar retracted, the tip of the bar should be in the middle of the cage.
  • In the picture, the saw bar is bent downwards. If the bar is straight, it should be where dotted yellow line is located.

  • If the bar mount plate is bent, check that the bearings inside the bar mount plate assembly are not broken. You can check by removing the chain and grabbing the nut that is on the saw bar shaft and wiggle it side to side… there should be no movement.
  • If there is movement, the bearings need to be replaced as well as the bar mount plate if it cannot be bent back.
  • If there is no movement, the bearings are OK. You may attempt to bend back the bar mount plate. This can be done with it still attached to the grapplesaw. You will need to remove the bar and use it as a shim.
  • Put the bar or shim under the bolt that goes through the saw bar plate and then loosen the bolt. The bolt will push against the bar and bend the bar mount plate back.

Cause: Saw Bar Bolt is too Tight

Look at the bolt that goes through the saw bar hydraulic cylinder. You should be able to see some of the bolt thread like in the picture. If you cannot see any thread, loosen the bolt and then try to cut.

Cause: Debris in Check Valves

Sometimes pieces of small debris get stuck in the check valves.

  • Locate and remove the four check valves (note where you took them from as there are two different types)
  • Look for debris or bad orings – clean and/or replace
